The Underpants

Written by Steve Martin | Adapted from Carl Sternheim

The Oscar-winning comic actor Steve Martin’s wild satire adapted from the classic German play about Louise and Theo Markes, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise’s bloomers fall down in public while watching the King’s parade. Leo flies into a panic thinking the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk. Louise’s momentary display does not result in the feared scandal but it does attract two infatuated men, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Markes’ home.

Most Outstanding Independent Production

“Gooley has a very adept and agile cast to work with and all contribute strongly to a production that leavens a high comic style with touches of palpable emotion. Martin’s characters could so easily be played as caricatures but here they seem well-rounded and their foibles human.”

— Jason Blake, Audrey Journal

“The palate cleanser you need from the routine of daily life.”

— TimeOut Sydney

“A fun, absurd piece of comic theatre that will have you bursting with laughter.”

— Broadway World

“It’s a straight up and down, guffaw-worthy farce. The Underpants is a full-bodied night at the theatre that doesn’t take itself or its subject matter too seriously. It’s an undeniably good night out.”
